Pragmatics and Semantics

A lot of contemporary philosophical theories focus on semantics. For example, Brandom focuses on linguistic meaning (albeit from a pragmatic perspective).

Others take a more holistic perspective on pragmatics, like relevance theory, which attempts to explore the understanding of the processes that lead to an utterance being made by a listener. However, this method tends to ignore other aspects of pragmatism, like epistemic debates over truth.

What exactly is pragmatism?

Pragmatism provides a different perspective to continental philosophy and analytic philosophy. It was conceived by Charles Sanders Peirce. It was extended by his friend and colleague William James, and later developed by Josiah Royce. It was influential in a variety of areas of inquiry that span from philosophy of science to theology however, it also found its place in the philosophy of ethics as well as philosophy of language, aesthetics, and social theory. The pragmatist tradition continues develop.

The pragmatic maxim is at the center of classical pragmatics. Although pragmatism can be considered an alternative to the traditional philosophical traditions of continental and analytic, it is not without its critics. For example some philosophers have claimed that pragmatism is simply an extension of deconstructionism and is not an innovative philosophical method.

In addition to these critics the pragmatism of the past was challenged by technological and scientific developments. For instance, pragmatists struggled to reconcile their opinions on science with the development of evolutionary theory, which was developed by a non-pragmatist, Richard Dawkins.

Despite these difficulties, pragmatism continues to grow in popularity worldwide. It is a third alternative to continental and analytic philosophy traditions, and has many practical applications. It is a growing field of inquiry and has many schools of thought forming and incorporating elements of pragmatism into their own philosophical framework.
